The road to Copenhagen 2009

At the Climate Change Conference in Bali, Parties to the UNFCCC decided to launch formal negotiations on a strengthened international deal on climate change. These negotiations are set to be concluded by the end of 2009 at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. To conduct the process, a subsidiary body under the Convention was set up, called the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA).
AWG-LCA reports and submissions

To discuss future commitments for industrialized countries under the Kyoto Protocol, the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol established a working group in December 2005 called the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP). The AWG-KP is also set to complete its work by the end of 2009.

Bonn Climate Change Talks, 2-13 June 2008
The twenty-eighth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change took place from 4-13 June 2008.
The second session of the Ad hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 2) and the second part of the fifth session of the Ad hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex 1 Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 5 ) took place from 2-12 June 2008.

Accra Upcoming Climate Change Talks
The third session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 3) and the first part of the sixth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 6, part I) will be held from Thursday, 21 August to Wednesday, 27 August 2008 in Accra, Ghana. The venue for the sessions is the Accra International Conference Center (AICC).
A limited number of side events and exhibits focused on the Accra Climate Talks will take place at Accra. The on-line application process will be available as of 11.00 am CET on Tuesday, 1 July until 5 p.m. CET on Friday, 4 July.

Address by Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary at the World Petroleum Congress

Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, today addressed the World Petroleum Congress, outlining the Bali Road Map and the need for the petroleum industry to become fully involved in the solution to climate change, including by implementing Carbon Capture and Storage demonstration projects. The statement also invites the petroleum industry to provide their insights on a Copenhagen agreed outcome in 2009.

Substantial new funding in sustainable energy sector - new report by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
1 July 2008
According to the UNEP report "Global Trends in Sustainable Energy Investment 2008", released 1 July, over 148 billion USD in new funding entered the sustainable energy sector in 2007. Responding to the report, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer said, "The positive trend in the renewable energy market is at least in part a business response to a policy expectation. If that expectation is not met, the conventional bottom-line will be the main driver for investment decisions."

Image UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to call for short- and medium-term CO2 targets at G8 summit in Japan

Urging world leaders to press forward in devising a strengthened international climate change agreement, Mr. Ban said: “In Hokkaido, I will ask for short- and medium-term targets for reducing greenhouse gases. It is not enough to talk of change by 2050. If we want real change, we must begin now – with targets for real progress by 2020.”

UNEP New UN atlas shows effects of climate change in Africa
A new atlas has been unveiled by UNEP showing the dramatic effects of climate change. The publication features over 300 satellite images taken in every country in Africa .The 'before' and 'after' photographs, some of which span a 35-year period, offer striking snapshots of environmental changes across the continent.
